Over 100 Lewisham artists collaborate on Get Living penthouse to celebrate local talent in line with London Design Festival

September 27, 2024

Get Living, one of the UK’s leading build-to-rent operators, is launching its latest neighbourhood, The Filigree Lewisham, with a one-of-a-kind collaboration lead by SHAPESLewisham and over 100 local artists, makers and designers coinciding with London Design Festival this month.

The vast array of multi-disciplinary talent have come together to design a 1,432 sq ft penthouse at The Filigree, creating an inspiring showcase of the diverse and vibrant creative community in Lewisham reflecting not only Lewisham’s rich history but also its dynamic present and promising future.

The home features talent from across the SHAPESLewisham network, including practitioners that have created immersive digital installations, hand woven blankets, wooden sculpted side tables, recycled lampshades and hand-printed textiles, as well as painters, illustrators, sign makers, florists, candle makers, and perfumeries.

With residents set to move into The Filigree’s 649 homes over the coming months, the penthouse also doubles as an immersive, interactive and shoppable gallery space in which people can purchase directly from artists; raising the visibility of their work, supporting local businesses and encouraging future collaborations.

The Filigree is Get Living’s third neighbourhood in London and comprises 649 homes, including 424 for market rent, 106 affordable homes, and 119 for co-living. These will be Get Living’s first co-living homes and will be self-contained studio-style flats with shared amenity space for socialising, cooking, wellbeing and working.

Rick de Blaby, Chief Executive at Get Living, comments, “Launching a new neighbourhood is so much more than the bricks and mortar, it’s also about celebrating and becoming part of the fabric of the wider place. Working with the SHAPESLewisham Network at The Filigree in Lewisham has enabled us to provide a platform for local Lewisham creative talent in a unique setting.

The penthouse not only showcases this talent, but also brings the local culture to life, bridging the gap between existing communities and new residents. We hope that it will inspire new relationships and partnerships across the area and help our prospective residents get to know Lewisham and its raft of creative talent in a new and exciting way.”

For project collaborator and leather designer Yusaf Osman, this collaboration also represents something that is often missing from bigger cities for creative entrepreneurs, “I think that being in a multicultural area like Lewisham is inspiring because craft is something that is historically rooted in community. However, in big cities like London this can be lost with artists often locked up in studios working on their own.”

“Being able to live and work in the same area as your creative practice is really important as you really get to live and breathe the culture, which in turn inspires your work. The ability to showcase this and have access to new people who are integrating into our local community is such a valuable opportunity.”

Interior designer, Hannah Drakeford, adds, “Since I’ve started my business and become a member of SHAPESLewisham, it’s been so beneficial in connecting me to a lot of other small creative business owners in the borough, as well as access to bigger collaborations and projects like this at The Filigree. As an entrepreneur and business owner who is also a creative at heart, I have really found a place in the local creative community that supports what I do and where my business is heading’

One, two and three-bedroom furnished homes are now available to rent at The Filigree from £1,925 and residents have the freedom to personalise their spaces, including the option to welcome pets and to decorate.
